SAN FRANCISCO – On Tuesday night, Kevin Pillar continued to win the hearts of Giants fans after a double to left plus a wild bounce cleared the bases.
The offensively struggling Giants started the inning in a peculiar way, with four consecutive singles to right field. Posey, Crawford, Longoria, and Solarte all hit to relatively the same spot and the Giants were able to put two runs on the board.
Hoever, they weren’t done just yet.
Gerardo Parra drew a 3-2 walk to load the bases and bringing up Giants’ starting pitcher Derek Holland. Holland struck out giving the Padres one out but after Pillar’s grand slam last night a bases-loaded situation felt eerily familiar. This time however, the Padres weren’t taking the new guy lightly anymore.
The Padres starting pitcher Joey Lucchesi tried to avoid last night’s situation with a first-pitch curveball in the dirt. However, as soon as Lucchesi located in the strike zone, Pillar made him pay. Pillar cracked a double into left field. Hunter Renfroe tried to play it safe and went for the ball on the hop, but a strange hop left Renfroe scrambling as the ball launched itself over Hunter’s head and deeper into left field. Pillar had a stand-up double and cleared the loaded bases.
Tyler Austin would pile on to the Padres woes in the very next at bat by knocking in Pillar and putting the Giants up 6-0 with one out in the second inning.
This surge of power made even more odd by the Giants inability to score in early innings this season.
The Giants had six hits in a six-run second inning. They entered the night with five total hits in the first two innings of games.
