On Thursday, Allan Byer, one of the key figures in the original ownership group that saved the San Francisco Giants from leaving the Bay Area in 1992, passed away at the age of 91.

Before Thursday’s game against the Rockies, manager Bruce Bochy commented on the loss of Byer, a man who meant a lot to the Giants.

“It’s a sad day. Allan was one of the original owners, and I had a lot of fun with him. He just had a great wit, and what what a tremendous job he did with the Giants Hall of Fame. He was good to me, and had a great family. My condolences to the family. He just had a great way about him, and he was really good to me. It’s a sad day.”

Byer, the owner of Byer California – a highly successful clothing supplier business – was an integral member of the ownership group that prevented the Giants from moving to Tampa Bay in the early 1990’s, spearheading the building of what is now Oracle.

His wit, charm, and warmth are qualities that endeared him to all within the organization that interacted with him, and he will surely be missed by the Giants family.
