Bochy, Holland explain why winning series vs. Rockies is so important

SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco Giants won their first series of the season this weekend against the Colorado Rockies. Winning the first three games, Derek Holland and the Giants offense failed to complete the four-game sweep of their division rivals.

Following Sunday’s series finale Bruce Bochy and Derek Holland discussed winning the first series of the season, and how it will build momentum moving forward.

Bochy was asked if winning this series helped stabilize things for a struggling Giants team early on.

“I do,” Bochy said. “I think you have to when you look at how it started. We hadn’t won a series and we were at home. The last thing we wanted to do was lose every series here. I found it was critical to find a way to win a series against a very good ball club.”

For a team that had previously lost every series of the season, their first series victory – along with solid pitching and defense – has boosted the confidence of the team.

“I think it raises the confidence of the club too,” Bochy said. “We’re going to see some good pitching, some good teams on this road trip. It’s good to see us have some success, win some ball games, take a series before we head to Washington.”

Holland started for the Giants Sunday, taking a loss while giving up four runs over six innings. He discussed what this series can do for the team moving forward.

“Yeah I mean that’s huge,” Holland said. “It gives us momentum going into the next one. Obviously we wanted to get a four-game series sweep, but at the same time every game is going to be a battle. You saw a couple of days ago, 18 innings. This was a good series win for us, but at the same time you have to get ready for the next one.”

The Giants have the day off Monday as they travel to Washington to take on Stephen Strasburg and the 7-7 Nationals. Following their trip to Washington, they continue their homestand with a trip to Pittsburgh to face the Pirates, before finishing up in Toronto to face the Blue Jays.
