Quarterback is one of the few positions not on the 49ers’ list of needs. Well, maybe not a first or second stringer, but it is likely San Francisco will have to add another QB at some point this offseason, once the battle between C.J. Beathard and Nick Mullens for the backup role plays itself out.
That third stringer could be T.J. Linta from Wagner college in New York City. New 49ers QB coach Shane Day visited Linta last week and came away impressed according to draft analyst Tony Pauline.
San Francisco 49ers quarterback coach Shane Day flew in from the west coast and worked out Wagner quarterback T.J. Linta yesterday. All accounts say Linta was impressive.

As they have in previous years, the 49ers will likely keep two quarterbacks on their active roster, with the third as a member of the practice squad. Whether it’s Beathard or Mullens as the odd man out come cut time, it’s unlikely that either would clear waivers and rejoin the team as a practice squad QB.
A tall (6-foot-4) pocket passer, Linta threw 13 TDs to 4 INTs in nine games last season. He reportedly had the best Wonderlic score of any QB in the upcoming draft class. Here’s a highlight reel for those interested:
