Two years after selecting him with the No. 3 overall pick, the 49ers are reportedly shopping Solomon Thomas, with the 2019 NFL Draft starting at 5 p.m. Thursday.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter said the same thing on ESPN.

Thomas has clearly disappointed through two NFL seasons. In 30 games, he tallied four sacks, 13 tackles for loss, and 17 quarterback hits — hardly impressive numbers for a top pick. Last year, however, Thomas played through unimaginable grief, as he mourned the loss of his younger sister, Ella. Thomas has since made a commitment to raising awareness for suicide prevention.

The 49ers are addressing the logjam at defensive line, which is only going to get more congested. All signs point to the team selecting a defensive lineman with the No. 2 overall pick, whether that is defensive end Nick Bosa or defensive tackle Quinnen Williams.

By trading Thomas, who has proven to better on the interior than edge, San Francisco could be making room for Williams, who can play either the three-technique or nose tackle. John Lynch has called Williams “special” and “dominant” throughout recent press conferences. The 49ers recently exercised DeForest Buckner’s fifth-year option in 2020 and picked up Arik Armstead’s option for the upcoming season.

These reports are sure to circulate throughout the rest of the day. With a top-two pick, the 49ers will likely receive a handful of trade offers.
