Prior to Wednesday night’s matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Giants front-office executive Farhan Zaidi sat down with Tolbert & Lund to talk about all things Giants baseball, including sharing with the fans his philosophy about trades and acquiring talent.

The Giants made a ton of moves heading into this season, and Zaidi gave some insight into the thought process that goes into adding a player.

“We’ve been talking about potential trades all spring,” Ziadi said, “and going into the season, obviously we have some areas of need. We’d like to improve the offense, but when you’re thinking about trade targets. There’s a threshold where you don’t want to necessarily pick somebody off somebody else’s triple-A roster.

“You’d rather give one of your guys a chance. If you’re going to go out and get an established big-leaguer, then that’s a different story, but just from a morale standpoint, you’d like to stay in house. And we’ve got some guys who are swinging the bats well in Triple-A, so we’re certainly looking at that as an option. I think if we go outside of the organization we’re going to look for somebody more established who could potentially help us right away.”

Farhan went on to say that while he and the rest of the front office have their eyes on the future, the present state of the ballclub is still of major importance to the organization.

“Front offices around the league have gotten so focused on years of control and how long you’re going to have a player,” Zaidi said. “We’re an organization that’s got our eye on the future, and we certainly don’t want to undermine that, but we put a lot of value on the present, too.

“If there’s another deal like that Pillar deal where we trade away some young guys for someone who can help us right now, we’re open to that for sure.”
