SAN FRANCISCO – San Francisco Giants top pitching prospect Shaun Anderson made his major league debut Wednesday afternoon. Anderson went five strong innings, allowing just two earned runs while striking out five in a game where the Giants beat the Toronto Blue Jays 4-3.
After Tuesday’s game, Anderson was happy that he was able to debut in front of family and friends while helping the team secure a win.
“I was happy that there was a date,” Anderson said. “I said it yesterday, but I was happy I could get my family out here on a certain date other than just hanging around. The family all made it and we got the win, so I was happy about that.”
Anderson and his family are from Florida, and the group he had cheering for him during his debut was rather large. Anderson was appreciative of the Giants organization for flying his large family out to San Francisco.
“Yeah, I actually didn’t let them know that night because they were all sleeping. It was 3 AM their time, so they didn’t find out until the next day. The Giants did a great job of flying them out and treating them right. They made it a memorable time for them as well, so I thank the Giants for that.”
Most of Anderson’s family was asleep in Florida, except his sister, who heard the news before any of them.
“Yeah so my sister was actually in Colorado, so she found out first. She was able to get off work, so that was nice.”
Following Anderson’s strong debut Wednesday afternoon, Giants manager Bruce Bochy said postgame that Anderson will remain in the rotation and make another start for the team.
“I don’t know the exact date we have him penciled in,” Bochy said. “But yeah he’ll make another start. I hate to say ‘another start’ like that, but he’s in the rotation right now.”
Anderson and the Giants have the day off Thursday as they travel to Arizona to take on the D-Backs for their first meeting of the season.
