Giants DFA Mac Williamson, call up power-hitting grandson of Carl Yastrzemski

The signs were clear. Mac Williamson was struggling mightily, and he needed to break his slump immediately. After striking out five-straight times on May 23, Williamson went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts last night, a night that was record-settingly bad for the San Francisco Giants. The team lost 18-2 to the Arizona Diamondbacks – a team which had lost five-straight games prior to last night – which proved to be an Oracle Park record for most runs allowed to an opposing team.

This morning, Williamson was designated for assignment. With no minor-league contract options left, this stint was essentially viewed as his last chance to prove himself with the Giants. After an electric first day with the team on May 7, in which he hit a home run, secured two hits and drove in four runs in a 14-4 win over the Colorado Rockies, Williamson failed to connect on pretty much anything. After last night’s 0-for-4, he had a .118 batting average (6-for-51), with a .211 on-base percentage and .196 slugging percentage.

Instead of continuing to put Williamson out there, the Giants chose to call up outfielder Mike Yastrzemski, the grandson of Carl Yastrzemski, who the Giants acquired this May by trading pitcher Tyler Herb to the Orioles.

In 40 games this season with the Sacramento River Cats, the 28-year-old Yastrzemski was hitting .316 with 12 home runs and 25 RBIs. He had a .414 on-base percentage along with a .676 slugging percentage. Whether he becomes the next Giants outfielder to enter and swiftly exit the rotating door of outfielders this season is yet to be seen.
