The Giants have been one of the worst defensive teams in baseball this season, and started off Wednesday’s game with a pair of first-inning errors. The Giants entered the game tied with the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees for third-worst fielding percentage (.979) in Major League Baseball.
One of the first-inning errors was committed by Brandon Crawford, and allowed a runner to move to third, with a two-out grand slam following soon after. Crawford found redemption in the bottom of the fifth inning when he saw the bases loaded with two outs yet again.
With Dereck Rodriguez on the mound in his third-straight scoreless inning after Drew Pomeranz allowed six through 1 1/3 innings and the score at 8-6, there was a chance for the Giants to let the game slip away. Rodriguez dealt to Orioles shortstop Richie Martin, who hit a chopper up the middle. Crawford ranged over to make the stop and managed to get the ball out quickly and accurately to Joe Panik to save at least a run, and keep the score at 8-6.
