The last time the San Francisco Giants had the 10th overall pick in the MLB draft, it was 2007, and the team drafted Madison Bumgarner. More than a decade and three World Series victories later, the Giants are looking at similar situation as they faced then.
After a down year in in 2006, the Giants finished dead last in 2007 in the National League West Division for the first time in 22 years (since 1985, when the division featured six teams). It’s a similar stew for what the Giants are approaching now. The team finished last again in the NL West in 2017, drafting catcher Joey Bart second overall last season.
The Giants were poor last season, but not the abysmal mess they were in 2017, or the mess they could end up being this season, leaving them with the 10th overall pick. With that pick, they drafted Arizona State University outfielder Hunter Bishop on Monday. Bishop is a left-handed hitting outfielder and Bay Area native who attended Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo, the same high school that Barry Bonds attended. Bishop is the 7th-ranked prospect by MLB.com. At 6’5″, he batted .344 with 22 home runs and 61 RBIs in his junior season.
