SAN FRANCISCO – They say good things come in threes, and that saying held true for the San Francisco Giants Tuesday night.
Tyler Beede gave up a first-pitch home run to set the Giants back a run early, but a Tyler Austin RBI single and a 2-run shot from Steven Duggar gave the Giants a trio of 4th-inning runs to put the hosts in front.
The very next half inning the Padres posted three runs of their own on a whacky little league-esque play and the Padres reclaimed their one-run lead.
But San Diego didn’t hold on to that lead for long. Brandon Belt, recovering from a batting practice neck injury, lead off the seventh inning and reached on a walk. The next batter up was Joe Panik, who singled to put runners on the corners.
After a Yastrzemski line out, Evan Longoria stepped up to the plate and smashed a double down the left-field line, just out of reach of a sprinting Wil Myers.
Belt scored easily, but Giants third base coach Ron Wotus sent Panik home from first after what looked like a decent throw to the awaiting cutoff man Fernando Tatis Jr. The Padres shortstop looked to have enough time to give his catcher a chance at the plate but put the ball in the dirt and Panik was able to score easily.
Longoria advanced to third during the play at the plate, and was promptly awarded for his play when Pablo Sandoval hit a sacrifice fly later in the inning to send the third baseman home for the third run of the inning.
Like we said, good things happen in threes.
Longoria entered Tuesday’s contest with a .228 batting average and 23 RBI through 58 games.
