Madison Bumgarner got hit. The Giants hit back.
Two innings after the Giants pulled Bumgarner, who had been struck by a comebacker just above his left elbow, Austin Slater hit a pinch-hit grand slam to put the Giants up, 5-1, over the Cardinals in the fourth inning Saturday at Oracle Park.
With the bases loaded — thanks to left fielder Tyler O’Neill appearing to lose a Joe Panik flyball in the lights a batter earlier — Slater pinch-hit for Sam Dyson. In his fourth game as a Giant this year, the call-up fended off a Miles Mikolas slider, sending it the other way and the ball just clearing the right-field fence.
It was Slater’s second homer of the season, in which he’s now 6-for-11.
