Giants’ home-plate ump leaves game after foul ball to mask

One of the stranger Giants games in recent memory took a turn for the even worse on Saturday.

Home-plate umpire Mike Everitt left the matchup against the Cardinals at Oracle Park with two outs in the top of the sixth after taking a foul ball off his mask.

With Tyler O’Neill at the plate and Reyes Moronta throwing a 97-mph fastball, the ball richocheted from O’Neill’s bat directly to Everitt’s mask, the umpire immediately looking woozy.

After a long pause, Lance Barrett shifted over from second to call balls and strikes.

The Giants ended the frame up 5-1 in a game that already had seen Madison Bumgarner leave early after getting hit and Austin Slater hit a pinch-hit grand slam.
