A new half, a new flier.
Before the second half of the season began Friday, Farhan Zaidi signed well-traveled minor league infielder Cristhian Adames.
Adames, who has been placed on the Triple-A Sacramento roster, is a familiar type for this franchise: not old, but not young, with talent that has bubbled up in the past but whom his last team had given up on. For the soon-to-be 28-year-old Adames, the last team is the Cubs, who released him from Triple-A this week, and the Giants pounced.
Adames, a middle infielder, had been hurt for Triple-A Iowa since May 1 and had played in the rookie league since late June in rehab. Combined, he’s slashed .267/.370/.567 in 18 games this season, the latest attempt to climb back to the majors.
Adames came up with the Rockies, debuting in 2014 and playing sporadically in the big leagues until 2017. He never hit, though, despite typically posting solid Triple-A numbers. In his longest stint, in 2015, Adames hit .245 with three home runs in 53 games.
Reliever Nick Vincent is set to begin a rehab assignment with Rookie-League Arizona. Vincent, on the 60-day injured list with a pectoral strain, is eligible to return July 28.
