Another bad break for Mac Williamson

Mac Williamson may have to go somewhere else to prove himself.

The Mariners designated the outfielder for assignment on Tuesday, likely ending his brief time with Seattle after it picked him up in early June. Williamson got off to a nice start with a team with low expectations and pressure, homering in his first at-bat, but production tailed off from there. In 25 games with the Mariners, he slashed .182/.276/.299 and struck out 26 times in 77 at-bats.

The numbers are not far off from his 15-game stint with the Giants this season, as the once-promising third-round pick had ping-ponged between San Francisco and Triple-A Sacramento the last few seasons, never fully displaying that he could be a major league player while crushing Triple-A pitching.

The Mariners have a week to either trade him, release him or get him through waivers, which would allow them to assign the 29-year-old to the minors.

The Giants did some transaction house-cleaning following Monday’s doubleheader, returning reliever Sam Coonrad, the 26th man, to Sacramento and optioning Dereck Rodriguez there as well.

Andrew Suarez was called up and figures to be a longman out of the bullpen, always a valuable commodity in Colorado. Drew Pomeranz gets the start Tuesday.
