Sam Dyson hurdles go-ahead double in fun Giants ending

Credit Sam Dyson’s arm with one save and his vertical with another.

The impromptu closer — set to be brought in with Bruce Bochy not wanting to tap Will Smith for a fourth game in five days — was warming up in the bottom of the eighth when the Giants began to rally.

Pablo Sandoval doubled before Brandon Crawford singled to score him. Austin Slater’s double to right-center plated another run. And Joe Panik slapped a ball down the third-base line that was heading right for Dyson, who noticed just in time.

He hurdled the ball, which just kept rolling, and the Giants kept rolling. Panik ended up on second and Slater scored the go-ahead run in a 5-4 Giants victory over the Cubs on Monday at Oracle Park.

Of course, Dyson’s job was not finished. After two quick outs in the ninth, he got into some trouble, walking Victor Caratini, and Addison Russell bounced a single to put the tying run on second. With the crowd on its feet — both Giants and Cubs fans loud — he got Kyle Schwarber, who had homered earlier, to pop out to record his second save of the year.
