SANTA CLARA – The 49ers went from being very healthy to not so healthy pretty much in one day. Head coach Kyle Shanahan admitted that he was pissed off with the way practice went on Wednesday after both Nick Bosa and Jason Verrett suffered preseason-ending ankle sprains.

“I was [pissed off],” Shanahan said. “I thought it was a little sloppy, too many guys on the ground. That’s why I don’t like to tackle. Guys get hurt when you go to the ground. We had two guys go to the ground yesterday and we had two good players have some pretty serious injuries from it.”

Still, Shanahan refuted that Bosa, who was injured for the second time this offseason, and who had his high school and college careers ended by serious injuries, is injury-prone.

“We have a guy come in and someone landed on his leg,” Shanahan said. “That doesn’t make me say someone’s injury prone cause he had one serious injury in college and tore his ACL sometime in high school like 60 percent of the players out there.”

So, what exactly are the 49ers’ expectations? Who’s healthy and who is going to be ready for Week 1? Let’s start with the biggest questions marks:

Week 1 returners? Maybe

  • Nick Bosa, and Jason Verrett, who, as mentioned, suffered a pair of fairly significant ankle sprains, are on the same timeline, in that they’ll be reevaluated at the conclusion of the preseason. They aren’t ruled out for Week 1, but it’s unclear whether they will be ready at this point.
  • Jerick McKinnon will receive a plasma-rich platelet (PRP) shot after dealing with a lot of soreness following his first practice back’ the 49ers will give him two weeks to recover, and will reevaluate him with 18 days before Week 1 after that recovery time. As Shanahan put it, if he’s not ready, “… we’ll be patient with him.”

  • Weston Richburg is still on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list and will be evaluated for a potential return in Week 1
  • K’Waun Williams had his knee “scoped” as Shanahan put it, and like the rest of the aforementioned group, will be out for the entire preseason, shooting to be prepared for a Week 1 return

Out for a while

  • Dee Ford is still dealing with knee tendinitis and while there’s been no status update, the 49ers won’t be in any rush to get him back for a preseason game
  • Jeff Wilson Jr. is still dealing with a calf issue and his status had not been updated since August 1, when Shanahan said he’d be back in one-to-two weeks
  • Kapron Lewis-Moore is on injured reserve with a groin issue, Garrett Celek remains on PUP recovering from back surgery, and is not expected to be back until at least Week 6, and Jamell Garcia-Williams is still dealing with a concussion
  • Joshua Garnett is still recovering from a finger surgery at the start of camp. Shanahan said he was expected to be back in about three weeks on August 1

Minor injuries

  • Arik Armstead is day-to-day with a calf issue, as is Ronald Blair III with a groin issue
  • Malcolm Smith did not participate in team drills, and had some individual work at the start of practice; his status is unclear with hamstring tightness
