Giants officially turn to Logan Webb after racing through system

Saturday is Webbday.

Bruce Bochy told reporters in Arizona on Friday that the following night’s starter would, indeed, be Logan Webb, the No. 5 prospect in the system, who just has made five starts above Low-A ball.

Webb, who was suspended early this season 80 games for testing positive for a PED, reportedly joined the Giants on Friday at Chase Field. A pitcher who started July 23 with Low-A Augusta will make his major league debut less than a month later.

The Giants have been desperate for rotation help, as Shaun Anderson struggled and then was placed on the IL, Tyler Beede has hit a wall, Conner Menez has not shown a ton and neither had Dereck Rodriguez until Thursday’s start. Webb will be the next to get a chance, the 22-year-old racing through the system like few before him.

Webb, a righty from Rocklin who was a fourth-round pick in 2014, made just one start with Triple-A Sacramento, going seven innings while allowing one run and striking out seven Monday. The Diamondbacks will represent a pretty steep escalation in competition from the Nashville Sounds.
