On Thursday, the 49ers announced that Jimmie Ward had broken a finger. According to head coach Kyle Shanahan, who spoke on KNBR early Friday morning, Ward underwent surgery on that finger Thursday night and it’s doubtful be able to play with a cast on his finger.

“Jimmie’s most likely not going to play… I’d be very surprised if he played,” Shanahan said. “He broke his finger, got it caught up in a jersey in practice, ended up having surgery on it yesterday. Jimmie’s… adamant he wants to play with a cast on. That’s what we’re still trying to wait to see for sure on, but I think we’re going to have to wait a week before we let him play with a cast on because any time you get surgery, just to do that right away, you deal with the risk of infection… don’t know for sure, but I’d be surprised.”

Shanahan will speak to reporters Friday afternoon to potentially provide a more exact update.
