There’s still fight left in San Francisco.
It was just unfortunately literal in the visitors’ clubhouse.
Former Giant Kyle Crick and pitcher Felipe Vazquez got into an “altercation,” the Pirates announced, before Monday’s game at Oracle Park that resulted in Crick Tuesday needing extensor tendon repair surgery on his right hand index finger.
Before the Pirates rallied for a four-inning ninth that turned a two-run deficit into a two-run lead — a game saved by Vazquez, who struck out two in the bottom of the ninth — there was drama in the clubhouse. It turns out Vazquez isn’t only dangerous with the ball in his hand.
“The behavior exhibited by these two players last night is unacceptable, inconsistent with the standards expected of a Major League player and will not be tolerated by the organization,” Pirates executive vice president and GM Neal Huntington said in a statement.
The Pirates announced both players were fined an undisclosed amount, and they expect Crick back in time for next spring training.
Crick, who came up with the Giants and made his debut in 2017 with San Francisco, was in the Andrew McCutchen trade and had a 4.96 ERA in 49 innings this season.
