Mike Yastrzemski’s start at Fenway: standing ovation and surreal homer

The last time a Yastrzemski homered at Fenway Park? July 31, 1983.

Not anymore.

Mike Yastrzemski, in his third plate appereance in Boston after an emotional day that included seeing his legendary grandfather, Carl, before the game, made sure the dozens of Yastrzemskis in attendance saw something they would remember.

Facing Nathan Eovaldi in the fourth inning, the grandson lifted a 3-1 offering to deep center, good for his 20th homer — in his year-29, rookie season — as Boston saw another Yastrzemski hit a homer at Fenway. His Hall of Fame grandpa hit 452 for his career.

Yastrzemski seemed to keep it cool as he rounded the bases and on into the dugout, even as Bruce Bochy flashed a rare smile as he welcomed him back. Yastrzemski became the second Giant this year to hit 20 homers, beaten only by Kevin Pillar.

In Yastrzemski’s first at-bat, Boston gave him a standing ovation. He walked in the third inning before the moment of perhaps his life.
