Giants’ Triple-A team is somehow the champ so many promotions later

Tuesday night was a nice night for the Giants, and not just those in Boston.

Over in Memphis, Tenn., there was another Giants affiliate — a team much better, comparatively at least — there to win a title. Triple-A Sacramento is the Triple-A champion of the world, the PCL champs beating the International League’s Columbus Clippers, 4-0, to take home some rings not just for themselves, but for so many Giants who spent time with the River Cats this season. According to the team, 85 players suited up for Sacramento this season to help a Giants Triple-A club win its first division since 1998.

It wasn’t Mauricio Dubon and Jaylin Davis and Mike Gerber and Tyler Rogers there for the glory. Caleb Baragar, who was solid for Double-A Richmond for much of the season, started his first game with Sacramento since May 2 and came through, allowing just two hits and a walk in five scoreless innings against the Indians affiliate. Steven Okert, who’s seen time with the Giants the past three seasons, got the save after Ricardo Pinto and Melvin Adon threw three shutout innings.

Meanwhile, the River Cats’ offense got three runs in the first, and that was all they would need.

Abiatal Avelino went 3-for-4 with a run score and, we suspect, didn’t run a stop sign. Minor league lifer Levi Michael contributed three hits, too, including a double. Peter Maris added a sixth-inning home run that provided the final cushion.

And once the last out was recorded, there was celebrating to do.

There will be so many rings to go around. Dozens of big-league Giants, from Stephen Vogt and Mike Yastrzemski to Sam Selman and Enderson Franco, have spent time as River Cats this season.

Speaking of Yastrzemski, he happened to hit a pretty cool homer Tuesday. So, it was a nice day for the organization.
