Shanahan updates timelines for Joe Staley, Ahkello Witherspoon

Following the 49ers’ 20-7 win over the Los Angeles Rams, head coach Kyle Shanahan provided updates on injuries sustained in the game as well as the statuses of Joe Staley and Ahkello Witherspoon (Mike McGlinchey’s timeline hasn’t changed).

D.J. Jones sustained a hamstring strain and Deebo Samuel sustained a groin strain; both will by day-to-day and questionable for this weekend at the Washington Redskins. K’Waun Williams, who was replaced by D.J. Reed for a few plays, sustained a hand injury, and Richard Sherman had a “stinger”. Both Williams and Sherman are expected to be available for the first week’s practice on Wednesday, though it wouldn’t be surprise to see them limited.

Just as James Taylor once sang “I’m going to Carolina in my mind,” the prospect of Staley and Witherspoon to return in Week 8 against the Carolina Panthers in more like a dream than reality. Shanahan said it’s possible both could return by then, with Witherspoon having the better chance than Staley.

On Witherspoon: “He’s going in the right direction, I think there’s a better chance next week (against the Panthers), but I do not expect him to have a chance this week.”

On Staley: “I’m still hoping for Arizona (Week 9), maybe a chance for Carolina, but I would consider that very lucky.”

Witherspoon has been doing sideline work in practices without pads since sustaining his foot sprain. Staley was active before Sunday’s game, doing warmups and some stretches on the field. Here is a bad video of that:
