Coin toss gate: Geno Smith says he called heads, footage has been ‘clearly’ edited

As if there wasn’t enough absurdity in the 49ers’ 27-24 Monday night loss to Seahawks, now even the legitimacy of the overtime coin toss is being thrown into question.

Audio from the broadcast sounds like Seahawks backup quarterback Geno Smith might’ve called tails, despite the official saying he called heads, and then awarding the ball to Seattle. Listen for yourself:

The footage above comes from the original broadcast and was pulled from the NFL’s official website. That is significant considering Smith implied that the entire controversy is a conspiracy, and when a commenter said the audio was edited, Smith responded with “clearly.”

Though the audio of official NFL footage being doctored is very unlikely, Smith told Jim Trotter of NFL Network that he called heads, although the logic of his reasoning wasn’t exactly airtight.

“‘Russell Wilson called tails to start the game, and the mathematical odds always favor you to going the opposite direction,’” Trotter recounted Smith telling him. “He told me to ‘do the math.’ I thought about it and I said, ‘It’s a 50-50 chance. I’m not smart enough to figure this out but it worked for you.’”

Whatever you believe, it would be silly to blame the coin toss on the Niners losing Monday’s game. San Francisco had a chance to win on a 47-yard field goal that was missed badly, and then gifted the Seahawks the ball back late in OT after they couldn’t gain a single yard on their next drive.
