Scott Boras reveals Farhan Zaidi conversations, says Giants focusing on trades

SAN DIEGO — Scott Boras, the super-agent whose fingerprints are all over this season’s free agency — he reps Gerrit Cole, Hyun-jin Ryu and Nicholas Castellanos to name just a few of those still on the board — expects to hear not now but later from Farhan Zaidi.

While the Giants have signaled at every turn that they are more focused on progress and less focused on playoffs for 2020 — they’re rebuilding, as everyone but the Giants would say — they also have maintained they will be in on some players to help next season’s team and the seasons beyond that.

On Monday at the Winter Meetings, Zaidi stated there will be “meaningful additions to this team that are going to impact the 2020 roster.”

While those additions could be of the Drew Pomeranz variety, it’s still what Boras likes to hear.

“I spoke to Farhan before we came to the Meetings,” Boras said in a press scrum at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront on Tuesday. “I think he’s gonna do some due diligence on his trades and then he indicated he’d be back with us to talk with us.”

So if the Giants are going to — very long shot — get involved in the Cole sweepstakes or — short shot — be bidding for Castellanos’ services, it will come after the Meetings let out Thursday.

In the meantime, Zaidi said the Giants expect to land a starting pitcher this week and on Tuesday reportedly acquired shortstop prospect Will Wilson, the 15th-overall pick this year, while eating the contract of veteran infielder Zack Cozart from the Angels. They also singed right-handed starting pitcher Kevin Gausman to a one year deal.
