A pair of ex-Giants find second chances in NL East [report]

If the Giants’ offseason has not exactly been a fireworks display, maybe some former Giants can register on the excitement scale.

Wednesday saw a pair go off the board, with Mac Williamson journeying back from South Korea to land with the Nationals on a minor league deal and Yangervis Solarte returning from Japan for a minor league pact with the Braves, according to USA Today. Maybe the NL East will be populated by Giants cast-offs.

Williamson will get another major league chance — and an invite to big-league camp — after he never could translate minor league success to major league success. The outfielder debuted in 2015, then bounced up and down between Triple-A and the Giants until late May of last year, when the Giants DFA’d him and he became a free agent.

He signed with the Mariners but again did not hit, slashing .118/.211/.196 in 57 plate appearances. After Seattle DFA’d him, he left MLB for the Samsung Lions, with whom he slashed .273/.327/.409 in 40 games.

Solarte had been an established big-league player when the Giants brought him in last offseason. He made the Opening Day roster but did not last long, struggling in 28 games before the Giants cut him. After a brief stint with the Marlins, he opted for the Hanshin Tigers, and now as a 32-year-old will try to find his way back to the majors.

The Giants placed Zack Cozart, whom they designated for assignment Monday, on unconditional release waivers.
