Giants won’t face Gray after A’s trade Monday starter [report]

The San Francisco Giants are coming off a three-game sweep against the Dodgers, but at least temporarily, things are looking up.

That’s because the Giants’ lineup won’t have to contend with former Oakland A’s ace Sonny Gray, who was scheduled to face San Francisco on Monday evening at the Coliseum.

On Monday afternoon, with an hour remaining before Major League Baseball’s trade deadline, the A’s reportedly traded their star right-hander to the New York Yankees in exchange for a trio of players. The news was first reported by Jack Curry of YES Network.

Oakland general manager Billy Beane has reportedly engaged in talks with a handful of contending clubs regarding Gray’s availability, and even after New York acquired Minnesota Twins lefty Jaime Garcia earlier this week, the Yankees’ interest in Gray remained strong.

Gray was initially scheduled to pitch on Sunday, but Oakland pushed his start back to Monday in the event that the A’s decided to deal their top arm. With Gray on his way out, it’s unclear who the Giants will face when they travel across the Bay Bridge on Monday night.

After moving Madison Bumgarner ahead of Matt Cain in the rotation on Sunday, Cain will take the ball for the Giants on Monday night.
