The 49ers entered training camp without any serious injuries on the 90-man roster. Just three days into camp, however, three members of the secondary have been nicked up and an undrafted rookie’s season has come to an end. Linebacker Jimmie Gilbert sustained a torn ACL on Sunday according to head coach Kyle Shanahan and will have season-ending surgery.

Gilbert is an undrafted rookie out of Colorado and received the second highest UDFA guarantee the Niners gave out this offseason, earning $62,000 between a signing bonus and base salary guarantee according to Niners Nation. Gilbert played in every game during his four year career at Colorado and was named an AP All-American and first-team All-Pac-12 last season. Gilbert was ranked by Pro Football Focus as the 28th most effective pass rusher in college football last season.
Gilbert had probably around a 50-50 shot to make the 53-man roster, and was likely competing with incumbent Eli Harold for a spot on the team. Harold has reportedly impressed in camp during the first three days. Gilbert will likely clear waivers and then be placed on the 49ers’ injury reserve list for the remainder of 2017.
