Kyrie Irving out Tuesday night for Cavs with knee injury

February 28, 2013

Kyrie Irving's knee has clearly was part of the issue Sunday when the All-Star point guard shot 6-of-16 and wasn't his same old self. Part of that can be attributed to playing the Miami Heat and their athletic perimeter defense, but Irving didn't look like himself

And so the Cavaliers are going to rest their star, tweets Jason Lloyd of the Akron Beacon-Journal.

Kyrie out tonight with hyperextended right knee. Medical staff decided to shut him down. Questionable for tmrw— Jason Lloyd (@JasonLloydABJ) February 26, 2013

This is not thought to be serious, as in he needs an MRI and is out for an extended period. More of a rest thing.

While that certainly takes the luster off the Bulls/Cavaliers game on NBA TV Tuesday (the team that breaks 80 points may win that one) it's the right move for the Cavaliers. Irving is the franchise anchor and the guy they are building around.

All-Star weekend one All-Star player told me he thinks in three years Irving will be the best point guard in the NBA. LeBron James sung his praises (which led to a lot of premature speculation). You have to take care of anchor players and the Cavaliers are not fighting for a playoff spot, so sit him until he is right. It's about the future, not February regular season games.
