MYCHAEL URBAN, who has been filling in as a weekday host at KNBR for the past six years, is in his second year of hosting the Sportsphone 680 Giants Warm-Up and Wrap-Up shows on KNBR every weekend during the baseball season. As a national writer for MLB.com, the official Web site of Major League Baseball, Mychael brings a unique perspective to the air as one of the privileged few who gets to see the daily grind of a baseball season from the inside out.
Mychael, who lives with his wife, Kelli, and daughters, Jacqueline and Natalie, in Livermore, Calif., has an in-depth knowledge of baseball in general and pitching in particular, starting with his own personal experiences. He was a left-handed reliever and spot starter at the University of San Francisco, and he spent a summer serving as the pitching coach for the Slovakian National Baseball Team, culminating in the team's fifth-place finish at the 1998 European Championships in Hull, England.
Also a published author, Urban wrote the Spring 2005 book "Aces," an inside story of the Oakland A's "Big Three" of Tim Hudson, Mark Mulder and Barry Zito. The book made the San Francisco Chronicle's best-seller list shortly after it was released, and a paperback version was released the following spring.
Mychael has arranged to interview Zito for the Sportsphone 680 shows every other week during the second half of the 2008 season, and the feature will be available on mp3 through KNBR Podcasting on this site. Mychael also interviews Bobby Evans, the Giants Director of Player Personnel, every Sunday in a segment called "Comin' Down the Pipes" that focuses on the team's minor-league players and operations. It also can be accessed here.
