Gardenland Power Equipment
50 Years of Service in the South Bay

Gardenland Power Equipment is celebrating the beginning of its 50th year in business. Gardenland is the largest power equipment dealership in the Bay Area offering a complete inventory of homeowner and commercial power equipment: generators, lawnmowers, chainsaws, blowers, line trimmers, hedge clippers, chipper shredders, roto-tillers and more.  To celebrate this anniversary, everyone who buys a power tool will also be entered into a drawing.  The prizes are a blower, cultivator and other power tools, with the Grand Prize  a trip for two to the San Francisco Marriott.

A 50-year Golden Anniversary is a truly memorable accomplishment for any business.  Times have changed, but the foundation for Gardenland’s success has always been grounded in some basic concepts of customer service established by Ray and Lucy Matsumoto, the original founders who are still active in the business.  In contrast to the relatively recent “box store” experience with its concept of high volume self service and do-it-yourself assembly, Gardenland has always provided expertise in its sales and repair service.  Its sales people help customers select the correct tool for the job and budget.  All equipment is fully assembled, serviced and tested for the customer at no extra charge.  Before leaving with the equipment, customers first view an instructional video on how to properly use and maintain the equipment, and then are assisted by a technician for other questions on operation and maintenance.  And for further support in the following years, Gardenland employs factory trained mechanics and stocks the largest inventory of replacement parts.

Ray and Lucy Matsumoto started Gardenland in 1960 at the current location.  After serving in the Army during the Korean War, Ray first worked as an auto mechanic and then as a gardener.  Using these experiences, when he saw a need for this type of retail business, he took the plunge and opened Gardenland.  In the early years there were the struggles and long hours every small business owner faces.   Revenue came primarily from repair services, and then hand tools and chemicals.  Sales of mowers and other equipment followed.  And for a few years, Ray sold mini-bikes, which turned out a generation of kids who remembered Gardenland.  Step by step the business grew, and it all comes down to providing the customer service that creates repeat customer sales and referrals.  Ray says, “We still have customers that come in and comment that they used to come in with their father.  Customer satisfaction is what makes a business successful.”

Gardenland’s customer service at its core is about solving problems and meeting needs of the customer and not just focusing on the product alone.  Customers come into Gardenland for various reasons.  If you’re looking to purchase new equipment, looking for a part to repair your own equipment, or need a repair for your unit, Gardenland’s knowledgeable staff can assist you.  While Gardenland cannot repair everything and anything, Gardenland’s 20 employees will use their over 150 years of combined experience in the power equipment industry to advise you on the best course of action.

Pats vs. Colts
Should Belichick have punted?
: Yes, it's harder to go 80 yards than 30 yards, even if you're Peyton Manning
: No, put the ball in the hands of your best player - that's Tom Brady
: Yes, It's just the right thing to do!
: No, He should have just called a deeper pass pattern
