Barrows: Ponder could open next season as 49ers’ starting quarterback

Christian Ponder is the only quarterback on the 49ers’ roster that hasn’t taken a snap in 2016, but that doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of him.

49ers beat writer Matt Barrows joined Sportsphone 680 on Friday evening, and said that Ponder will probably get a chance to play before this season is over. If he does well, Barrows believes that he may be the placeholder next season, assuming the 49ers elect to take a quarterback in next year’s draft.

“(Ponder) may end up getting some snaps at the end of the season, and if he does well, may end up being the guy who’s your placeholder if you decide to draft a rookie in the 2017 draft,” Barrows said.

Both Ponder and Blaine Gabbert will be unrestricted free agents in the offseason. Colin Kaepernick can either resign for $14.5 million in 2017 or make himself a free agent.
