New 49ers general manager John Lynch broke some news at his introductory press conference Thursday afternoon, announcing that the organization has hired former Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew as a senior personnel executive.

Mayhew, 51, served as the Lions’ GM from 2008 to 2015. During his time in that position, the Lions went 53-81, going 0-2 in two Wild Card playoff appearances. Mayhew was a cornerback in the NFL from 1988-1996, and played alongside Lynch for four seasons (1993-1996) in Tampa Bay. Mayhew spent last season as the director of football operations for the New York Giants.

Lynch also mentioned that assistant general manager Tom Gamble will stay in the front office. Gamble has been with the organization since 2004, and the assistant GM since 2012.

“You know Jed (York) said ‘hey, do you have a problem (with Gamble),’” Lynch said. “I said ’29 years of experience, why wouldn’t I embrace that?’ So I’m going to embrace all those guys.”

Both Gamble and Meyhew will join former Broncos director of college scouting and new 49ers vice president of player personnel Adam Peters.
