Giants closer Mark Melancon is ready to return and will be activated before Wednesday’s game against Los Angeles.

His original estimated return date was Friday, May  19.

According to manager Bruce Bochy, Melancon looks strong and returns at a good time. Derek Law has pitched in four out of the last five games and is scheduled for a day off.

“He threw a pen a couple of days ago and felt great,” said Bochy. “No restrictions, full on bullpen. He’s adamant, he’s ready to go and he’s our closer so why wouldn’t we go ahead and activate him.”

Kelby Tomlinson was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento as the corresponding roster move.

Melancon was placed on the 10-day disabled list May 9 with a right pronator strain near his elbow. Both Bochy and Melancon were confident about his return at the time of the move.
