Lester and the long-ball burn Giants in road loss to Cubs

After a brief rain delay the Chicago Cubs crushed three home-runs on their way to a 4-1 win at home, Tuesday over the visiting Giants. Cubs left-fielder Kyle Schwarber got the game started off with a bang, blasting a solo shot out of the stadium with one out in the bottom of the first. Jason Heyward followed Schwarber’s lead and hit a solo home-run of his own with one out in the bottom of the second. Giants starter Johnny Cueto got tagged for one final time in the fourth, when he gave up a two-run homer to Anthony Rizzo.

This was Cueto’s second straight lose and puts his record at 4-4.

Another the other end, was Cubs pitcher John Lester who picked up the win while pitching his 15th career complete game. Lester managed to finish the game with just 99 pitches thrown, 70 of which were strikes. Lester set the tone for the evening with three straight strikeouts to start the night and allowed just four hits in the game. He finished the game with ten strikeouts and no walks while allowing just one run off of a Brandon Crawford double in the fifth.

The fifth inning was the only one in which the Giants secured more than one hit, as Lester absolutely dominated the entire Giants’ lineup. Christian Arroyo’s struggles at the plate continued as he registered no hits while striking out twice and flew out to left to end the game.

The Giants will look to shake the lose off Wednesday with Matt Moore facing off against Chicago’s Kyle Hendricks.
