Posey extends lead in All-Star voting at catcher

Buster Posey, seemingly the lone bright spot for the Giants this season, extended his voting lead for the All-Star game at the catcher spot in the latest update released on Monday. With over 900,000 votes, Posey now leads second-place Willson Contreras of the Cubs by more than 200,000 votes.

The Nationals currently have three players in position to start the All-Star Game, set for July 11 at Marlins Park in Miami. The Cubs have plenty of players within striking distance of a starting spot, however, with players in either first or second place at each infield spot and three outfielders in the top six.

If Posey holds to his commanding lead, it would be his fifth appearance in the All-Star Game and his fourth career start, including his third in a row. The 30-year-old is hitting .343 with seven home runs and 14 RBI this season for the Giants. No other San Francisco players find themselves in the top five at infield positions or top 15 in the outfield spots. Posey could very well be the Giants’ lone representative at the 2017 Midsummer Classic.

The next voting update will be released next Monday, June 12.
