Pablo Sandoval to sign with Giants [report]

The Bay Bridge is impressive. The Golden Gate Bridge is majestic. The bridges the Giants are going to attempt to rebuild with Pablo Sandoval might be even more remarkable.

On Wednesday evening, Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com reported that the Giants are signing Sandoval the same day the Boston Red Sox announced they released the former San Francisco third baseman.

Earlier Wednesday, Giants’ general manager Bobby Evans said on KNBR that it was still possible the Giants would be interested in signing Sandoval, but downplayed the team’s interest and suggested the franchise had more pressing matters.

But later in the day, the Giants are now reportedly planning on signing the Panda.

Terms of the deal have not been made public, but Evans indicated on KNBR that the Giants would be willing to resign Sandoval if he would commit to terms the team specified, which could include playing in the Minor Leagues before appearing in a Major League game with the club.

Sandoval was designated for assignment by the Boston Red Sox last week, and the Red Sox will owe Sandoval the remainder of his contract. If the Giants follow through and end up signing Sandoval, they will only be on the hook for paying him the Major League minimum should he return to the big league club.
