Brandon Belt a late scratch for Giants

LOS ANGELES–With the way the San Francisco Giants have struggled this season, general manager Bobby Evans has reiterated that he’s open to taking phone calls and hearing offers that have the potential to make his club better in the future.

And for a brief moment on Friday evening, it appeared as if Evans was preparing to make a blockbuster move.

It’s the time of year when any late scratches from lineups lead to immediate speculation regarding potential trades, and on Friday evening, Giants’ first baseman Brandon Belt was a late scratch from the team’s lineup.

However, Belt is not on the move.

Immediately after Belt was scratched from the Giants’ contest against the Dodgers on Friday evening, San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy confirmed that Belt is out of the lineup due to a sprained wrist that Belt re-aggravated on Wednesday in the Giants’ win over Pittsburgh.

“His wrist is sore again, he said he dove for a ball that last game in San Francisco,” Bochy said. “Got treatment today went in the cage and said he couldn’t swing. Same wrist and we had to scratch him.”

Bochy said Friday that he’s hopeful the Giants won’t need to place Belt on the disabled list, and that the team will reevaluate him on Saturday morning.

“I hope not, we’ll see how he’s doing tomorrow,” Bochy said. “Hopefully it’s just a day-to-day thing.”

Belt initially injured his wrist on Saturday, July 15 against the San Diego Padres, and missed two games before returning to action against the Cleveland Indians last week.

Belt struggled in his initial return, but recorded four extra base hits in the Giants’ series win over the Pirates this week.

With Belt out, Buster Posey will play first base and Nick Hundley will catch and hit seventh.
