Gomez injured in first inning, replaced by Panik

SAN FRANCISCO–Giants’ rookie Miguel Gomez earned just the fifth start of his Major League career on Tuesday evening.

Unfortunately for Gomez, the time he spent playing Tuesday’s contest wouldn’t last long.

After bouncing out to Cubs’ shortstop Javier Baez in the bottom half of the first inning, Gomez received attention from the Giants’ training staff in the team’s dugout. Gomez injured himself running up the first base line, and appeared to slow down en route to the first base bag.

The Giants have not announced the official injury Gomez exited the game with.

Gomez was replaced in the top half of the second inning by Joe Panik, who was taking a scheduled night off.

Gomez’s groundout came two batters before Giants’ catcher Buster Posey put the team on the board with a three-run home run to left center field off of Cubs’ lefty Jose Quintana. Gomez was likely included in the lineup to give Panik a rest against a left-handed pitcher.
