Flint, Michigan celebrates Warriors’ center with ‘JaVale McGee Day’

September 6 is officially JaVale McGee day.

Well, at least in Flint, Michigan.

McGee returned home to the city he grew up in on Wednesday with the Golden State Warriors’ Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy in tow. The nine-year NBA veteran was honored at Flint City Hall on Wednesday where mayor Karen Weaver proclaimed September 6, 2017 “JaVale McGee Day.”

McGee had the opportunity to showcase the trophy in front of students in his hometown, and offered words of wisdom for young people who he hopes are able to achieve the same dreams he has.

“I just want to tell you guys, just being able to be from this city, just working hard, it’s just a blessing to be able to do so,” McGee said. “It’s definitely an inspiration for me, even winning a championship just for you guys and just showing you guys there’s a way out and there’s bigger things than just staying in your city. There’s a whole world out there and you can do anything if you put your mind to it.”

McGee averaged 6.1 points per game and 3.2 rebounds per game for the Warriors last season, and after signing a new contract this offseason, the 7-foot center will be back with the franchise next season.
