The Giants doesn’t have an official coaching vacancy, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t holding interviews.

The club has interviewed former Giant Chili Davis for the hitting coach position currently occupied by Hensley “Bam Bam” Meulens, sources have told Andrew Baggarly of the Bay Area News Group.

The Giants are apparently looking to shake things up on the coaching staff after finishing the 2017 season tied for the worst record in baseball (64-98), and overhaul their hitting instruction at both the major and minor league level.

Baggarly is reporting that the club would like to retain Meulens, who has been the major league hitting coach since 2010, in another position, possibly as the bench coach if possible.

Davis, 57, was an 11th round pick by the Giants in 1977, and had a distinguished 19-year career with four teams, hitting 350 career home runs and making three All-Star teams. He spent three seasons as the A’s hitting coach from 2012-2014, and was the Red Sox hitting instructor under John Farrell from 2015 to present.
