It took one day to pull off Garoppolo deal

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who broke the story on the blockbuster trade of Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, it took one day for the deal to come together.

Schefter also explained on KNBR’s Tolbert and Lund that it wasn’t a complicated trade, nevertheless, going from nothing to the biggest trade of the year in the space of a day is an accomplishment.

Schefter also said that the Patriots didn’t want to trade him.

“They tried hard to sign him last year,” Schefter noted. However, Garoppolo wanted to be a starter, and even though Tom Brady is 40, he apparently was unwilling to wait to be the starter in New England.

“The Patriotes had a great belief in him,” Schefter said, “and believe he can be a great quarterback.”

Patriots coach Bill Belichick apparently has a lot of respect for 49ers’ general manager John Lynch, however it was need and circumstance more than relationships that got the deal done for a second-round pick according to Schefter.

“Let’s be honest, you are going to do something that makes sense for your team more than anything else,” Schefter said.

The 49ers also benefitted from being in the NFC. Schefter said the Jets would have loved to have Garoppolo but there was no way New England was going to trade him within the division. Cleveland also would have made the deal, but the Patriots apparently wanted him out of conference.
