Shanahan to start Beathard, but Jimmy Garoppolo could see the field

When asked if Jimmy Garoppolo could play in certain offensive packages Sunday against the visiting Giants, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said, “I would consider everything.”

Shanahan said that rookie C.J. Beathard is his starter going into Wednesday’s practice but things could change. The most likely scenario is Beathard will start against the struggling Giants, but that Garoppolo could get some snaps in particular situations.

Going back to 1979, Bill Walsh would bring in a promising rookie named Joe Montana when the 49ers neared scoring territory. Of course, Montana had gone through training camp at that point and Garoppolo has been a 49er
for barely over a week.
However, Shanahan did say that he felt comfortable with Garoppolo being the backup last Sunday against Arizona. Garoppolo was versed enough on about 20 passing plays and the run game in order to function if Beathard got hurt.
Coaches made up a different play sheet for Garoppolo in case Beathard didn’t survive one of the 16 hits he endured last week.
This week that play sheet is likely to expand.
