49ers complete 8th longest TD pass in team history

The 49ers retook the lead from the Giants in the second quarter by completing a picturesque 83-yard touchdown pass from rookie C.J. Beathard to speedster Marquise Goodwin. It was the eighth longest touchdown reception in team history and it provided the 49ers with a fleeting 10-6 lead.

The 49ers looked as if they were anticipating a Giants’ blitz. They kept running back Carlos Hyde and tight end Garrett Celek in to the block, and each of them cut down Giants pass rushers. It allowed Beathard to simply step to his right and then fire a long pass to Goodwin, who caught the perfectly-thrown ball in stride.

Goodwin planted a stiff-arm into the trailing Janoris Jenkins, the Giants best cornerback, which allowed Goodwin to jog the last 20 yards into the end zone.

The enduring image on this play was Hyde. As his teammates celebrated in the end zone, Hyde was 80 yards down field at the 49ers’ 20, down on one knee and pumping his fist. Without his pass protection, the best offensive play of this forgettable season never would have happened.
