Garoppolo replaces injured Beathard, throws TD in first series as 49er

SANTA CLARA–49ers’ rookie quarterback C.J. Beathard was injured with just over a minute left, when he was hit by Seattle defensive end Michael Bennett. Bennett was offsides on the play.

Beathard was down for several minutes, and then walked gingerly to the sidelines. Jimmy Garoppolo entered and threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to receiver Louis Murphy on the game’s final play from scrimmage to make the final score 24-13 Seahawks. Garoppolo also scrambled for yardage and completed another pass before throwing the scoring strike to Murphy.

The rain-soaked fans that remained at Levi’s cheered lustily after he entered and exploded in cheers again after Garoppolo fired his touchdown strike. Once again in this wild season, the 49ers might be undergoing another major change.

It was the first playing time for Garoppolo since he was traded to the 49ers for the Patriots’ second-round pick at the end of October. The when-should-Garoppolo-play debate ensued immediately after coming to the team. Now, if Beathard is hurt for any length of time that question will be answered. The 49ers travel to play the Bears next Sunday.
