Kordell Stewart believes Jimmy G can be better than Matt Ryan

Former NFL quarterback and now radio personality Kordell Stewart expects huge things from the combination of Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback and Kyle Shanahan as coach. He said so on KNBR Tonight with Kevin Frandsen and Ryan Covey.

“For a quarterback to groom in the Kyle Shanahan system, he’s about as perfect as perfect can get in my opinion,” said Stewart, who played 11 years in the NFL with the Steelers, Bears and Ravens. “He’s learned from the best. … Tom Brady. I think he and Bill Belichick and (Belichick’s) psychological approach to the game, I think that’s going to bring so much value to this football team.”

Garoppolo will make his first start for the 49ers Sunday in Chicago. With Garoppolo’s skill set, Stewart believes something special could develop once he learns the Shanahan system.

“I think he’ll be better than the Matt Ryan we have here in town (Atlanta),” Stewart gushed. “I like Jimmy Garoppolo that much because of how he was taught when he came into the National Football League.”

Former Rams coach and NFL offensive coordinator Mike Martz, appearing on the same show, was cautious about what Garoppolo could do initially.

“You can’t expect a terrific talent to come in there with very little help and turn things around and start winning and be very productive,” Martz said, lending the coach’s perspective. “You have to be careful when you evaluate him.”

Martz took note of Garoppolo’s limited knowledge of the system and the diminished talent around him.

“You want to see him make throws and make good decisions knowing full well there will be a limit to what he can do,” Martz said.
