The reports are flying in on Thursday morning.
First it was Jon Heyman reporting that Giancarlo Stanton was hesitant to accept a trade to the Giants because of concerns over their lack of depth after finishing the 2017 season with 98 losses. Minutes later, Jon Morosi reported that the Marlins would be willing to accept an offer of Joe Panik, Tyler Beede, and Chris Shaw in exchange for the NL MVP, provided that the Giants are willing to pay ‘at least’ $250 million of the $295 million remaining on Stanton’s contract.
Giancarlo Stanton trade development: Source says #Marlins likely would accept offer of Panik, Beede and Shaw for Stanton alone — if #SFGiants committed to paying at least $250 million of the $295 million left on Stanton’s contract. @MLB @MLBNetwork

Craig Mish reported 10 days ago that the Giants had offered up the three players in question with the hopes of landing both Stanton and Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon in return. It was not known at the time how much of Stanton’s contract the Marlins wanted the Giants to take on, but it appears even if they eat a large portion of it, the Giants will have to add more talent to the deal to land Gordon.
For what it’s worth the Dodgers are now considered as Stanton’s preferred destination. The NL MVP has a no-trade clause and can veto any deal that sends him somewhere he doesn’t like.
