Giants sign Hector Sanchez to Minor League deal [report]

If there was one free agent hitter the Giants’ pitching staff needed Bobby Evans to sign this offseason, it was former San Francisco catcher Hector Sanchez.

On Thursday evening, it was mission accomplished for the Giants’ general manager.

According to a report from Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area, the Giants agreed to terms with Sanchez on a Minor League contract that will allow him to return to the organization with which he made his Major League debut. Sanchez is a seven-year Major League veteran who spent his first five campaigns with the Giants before playing with the Chicago White Sox and San Diego Padres.

Though Sanchez hit just .219 for the Padres last year, he clubbed eight home runs including four against the Giants. San Francisco’s pitchers simply couldn’t find a way to get Sanchez out, as he went 9-for-30 against the club and drove home 11 of his 25 RBIs against his old club. Sanchez hit a pair of home runs off of Jeff Samardzija last seaeson as well as a walkoff shot against left-hander Steven Okert.

The Giants re-signed backup catcher Nick Hundley earlier this offseason, so it’s unlikely Sanchez will make the Major League roster barring an injury.
