Durant out against Clippers, Kerr downplays Warriors’ injury report

For the seventh time this season, Warriors’ forward Kevin Durant will miss a game due to injury, as the 2017 Finals MVP is out with a right calf strain.

Durant injured his calf in the first quarter of Golden State’s 125-122 win over Dallas on Wednesday night, but played through the pain as the Warriors held off the Mavericks. On Thursday, the Warriors determined that Durant needed to rest on the back end of a back-to-back against the Houston Rockets, and he sat out as Steph Curry and Klay Thompson led Golden State to a 124-114 win.

Though Durant is likely improving, the Warriors have taken every precaution possible with their stars this season as the 7-footer will miss his second straight game on Saturday afternoon when the team visits the Los Angeles Clippers at Staples Center.

Prior to the matchup, head coach Steve Kerr explained why the Warriors’ injury report was so detailed, as five other players were listed as “probable,” before Kerr announced that all five would play.

“I think that’s more an indication of how the league protocol is,” Kerr said. “You have to report every bump and bruise, so every game there are going to be guys who are probable and that’s fine. It’s just transparency. The only guy who is not playing is Kevin, everybody else is playing.”

Curry was listed on the injury report heading into Saturday’s game, even though he’s played in three straight games since returning from a sprained ankle that sidelined him for more than three weeks. However, Kerr said he was unaware of any ankle pain Curry might be feeling.

“That’s the first I’ve ever heard of that,” Kerr said. “Nobody’s said anything to me about Steph’s ankle. If it was a problem, Chelsea would have said something to me and Steph would have said something. So maybe we’re going overboard on this. My thumb hurts today, if you guys want to report on that, but I’m going to coach.”
