Sixteen years after managing his last game with the Giants in 2002, Dusty Baker is returning to the organization as a special advisor to director of baseball operations Brian Sabean, the club told reporters Monday morning. Baker will also reportedly be a special advisor to CEO Larry Baer.

Baker, 68, managed the Giants for a decade, from 1993-2002, winning 90 or more games five times, and winning the NL Pennant in his final season. Baker was named the National League Manager of the Year three times during his tenure in San Francisco. Baker, who played in the majors as an outfielder for 19 years, also played for the Giants for one season in 1984.

After his contract was not renewed by the Giants and then managing partner Peter Magowan in 2002, Baker spent the next 15 years managing the Cubs (2003-2006), Reds (2008-2013), and Nationals (2016-2017). Baker was shockingly not retained by the Nationals this offseason, after winning 192 games and consecutive NL East titles during his two-year tenure. The Nationals were knocked out of the NLDS in both seasons.

Baker managed 1863 games in 22 seasons, posting a winning percentage of .532.
